Table Exhibition #3
“There is nothing more elegant than Form through Resistance.”
-Eladio Dieste
In this exhibition, I invite you to revisit the holistic and sustainable designs/details/projects that I have realized within my engineering practice, through the four materials that constitute the grammar of my structural engineering and the related techniques and technologies.
The teachings and inspirations I attained from New York, especially at Columbia University, from professors who introduced me to structural artists and showed that the most elegant form comes from resistance, the influences from Leonardo Da Vinci and the ancient world, all the readings and friends who said that creativity and technique can merge in the same vessel, and another polymath: Atatürk... Peter Rice and other creative structural engineers, the inspirations from Vitruvius, who advocated for Aesthetics-Strength-Function-Economy, and similar channels have always illuminated my path. Perhaps with this light, I have easily seen in my professional practices that when architecture and engineering are unified, they create wisdom and value.
Today, I can summarize concepts such as simplicity, honesty, economy, development, tectonics, off-site production, carbon minimization, avoidance of fake cladding production, and the aesthetics of technique with the formula Engineering = Architecture = Holism = Sustainability. Therefore, with this exhibition, which includes the details of the "formation process" that becomes invisible after a structure is completed, I have tried to offer you a "reverse perspective" to both trace this summary formula and to make the intellect and the labor behind the created value visible.
In the pursuit of creative structures, I hope we can take steps together towards a more sustainable and graceful future.
Ahmet Topbaş
Ahmet Topbaş is a structural engineer and the founder of ATTEC, a structural design and engineering firm based in Istanbul and Newyork. He graduated from Istanbul Technical University with a degree in civil engineering in 1995. He furthered his education in the United States, earning an MBA from Georgia State University and an MSc in Structural Engineering from Columbia University in New York.
Throughout his career, Ahmet Topbaş has gained extensive experience both in Turkey and the USA, including significant roles in construction and project management at Navigant (SoundBuild) and as a structural designer and project engineer at Thornton Tomasetti. He holds a Professional Engineering (P.E.) license in the United States, which underscores his expertise and qualifications in the field.
Topbaş is recognized for his innovative approach to structural design, working with various materials such as steel, wood, masonry, and concrete. His projects often integrate these materials to create unique, aesthetically pleasing, and structurally sound buildings. Additionally, he is involved in academia, sharing his knowledge through lectures and workshops at engineering and architecture schools in Istanbul.
His firm, ATTEC, is known for tackling challenging projects and providing creative engineering solutions, contributing to numerous architectural, transportation, industrial, and infrastructure projects.
