“13/21” - GEMSS'21 Celebrates the Diversity of Architectural Practices!
The selection process of the second edition of GEMSS (Emerging Architects Selection & Exhibition) has been completed. GEMSS is organized by The Circle to record innovative ideas and productions of young creators under the age of 40, who contribute to the architectural culture, and to carry them to international platforms. In the selection, there are 13 practices (9 individuals + 4 teams) and 21 applicants who practice architecture in all alternative areas, scales and media in Turkey and all over the world.
GEMSS'21, achieved the national and international diversity it targeted with applications from many different countries of the world and many cities of Turkey. Selection Committee, which came together online on Wednesday, September 29, made a selection consisting of emerging talents who work in various areas with architectural knowledge. In addition to the conventional way of practicing architecture, the selection includes creators and teams that contribute to the cultural environment with their editorial, curatorial, artistic and academic work. Setting off with an emphasis on diversity and inclusion this year, GEMSS continues to grow its community with the selection in its second edition.
The GEMSS'21 selection was determined by a multidisciplinary selection committee consisting of architects, artists, academics, building sector representatives under the moderation of Sait Ali Köknar. Among the 136 qualified candidates who applied, a total of 13 practices were selected to be represented at the GEMSS'21 exhibition which will be opened in December 2021. The selection committee (Ömer Selçuk Baz, Pelin Derviş, Murat Germen, Tülin Hadi, Luca Molinari and Şebnem Yalınay Çinici) underlined terms such as “sustainability”, “diversity and plurality”, “individuality and collectivity”, “social dimension of architecture” and that the selection creates an opportunity to remember the potentials of architecture.
The GEMSS'21 process will continue with Parallel Events to be held in October, November and December, following the results announced on the World Architecture Day. The year 2021 will bring the GEMSS community and cultural environment together with the Exhibition Opening in December.
