EMERGING ARCHITECTS SELECTION & EXHIBITION applications are now over!
The applications for the Emerging Architects Selection & Exhibition (GEMSS'21), organized by The Circle in İstanbul, Turkey, with an open call that invited all creative practices that contribute to the architectural culture to apply, ended on September 15th, resulting in a wide participation. Among the applicants are individuals and teams consisting of architects, artists, designers and academics who aim to contribute to the architectural culture and cultural environment from 11 countries from different geographies.

The Circle - Emerging Architects Selection & Exhibition 2021 / GEMSS 2021
Open Call
The Emerging Architects Selection & Exhibition, held every two years, aims to increase the national and international recognition of young architects under 40 and also intends to create an up-to-date archive on architecture. The new version of GEMSS is designed to be more inclusive, pluralistic and international. GEMSS’21 which is open to individual architects and teams who have produced a work with an architectural, intellectual, scientific, artistic or social dimension that contributes to the architectural culture, sets out from the idea that all alternative practices are valuable and emphasizes the diversity of the ways in which architecture is practised.
The selection committee of GEMSS’21 consists of architects, academics, artists and construction industry professionals. The second edition of GEMSS will be carried out as a hybrid activity on both physical and online platforms and in addition to exhibition, it will be supported by a program of panels, talks, online publications and a selection book.
GEMSS'21 program will start with an Open Call on July 7 2021, and will continue in The Circle and on digital platforms with events extending throughout 2022. After the exhibition in The Circle's physical space, the GEMSS'21 exhibition will be moved to different locations in Turkey and abroad.

01 Application Terms
> Individual & Team Application
You can apply GEMSS’21 both individually and as a team. In team applications, one of the team members should be designated as Team Contact Person.
> Bachelor’s Degree
All individual applicants and at least one of the team members must hold a Bachelor’s Degree in Architecture.
> Under The Age Of 40
All individual applicants must be under the age of 40. In team applications, the mean of the members’ ages will be taken into consideration.
02 Application Steps
To apply to GEMSS’21, you can follow these steps on the Application Page:
1.
Download the Application Kit. Prepare your application documents. Upload the documents on WeTransfer and get a link.
2.
Fill out the digital Application Form on the application page. Place the WeTransfer link in the specified area within the form.
3.
After you do the last checks, complete you application by submitting the digital form. The updated deadline for applications is 15 September.

’’I just turned 40 years old, can I apply?’’
Individual participants should have not reached the age of 41 by 31 December 2021; the mean age of the participants applying as a team should not exceed 40.
’’Do I need to download and fill out the application form?’’
In this cycle of GEMSS, applications are submitted online via the digital Application Form.
’’Where can I find the application form?’'
You can access the digital Application Form through the Application section in the GEMSS’21 page, by clicking APPLY NOW! button.
’’Is GEMSS a competition?’’
GEMSS is a selection program that is followed by an exhibition and parallel events. There is no ranking in the selection.
’’What will I gain from taking part in the GEMSS'21 selection?’’
The GEMSS organizes prestigious events and publications aimed at increasing the visibility of the architects in the selection, both in Turkey and in the world. The architects in the selection will take part in these organizations spanning 2021 and 2022.
’’What exactly are the submission material?’’
You need to submit you Portfolio, CV, Presentation Board, Additional Documents and the Application Form as to complete your application. PS: In team applications, submission details may change. For further details check out the Specifications document.
’’Can I make changes in my application?’’
After you complete your application, if there’s anythinhg you’d like to change, you can make all changes via gemss@thecircle-o.com before 150 September.
’’How involved will those in the GEMSS'21 selection have to be in the future?’’
The architects in the selection are expected to take part in all national and international events, exhibitions and publications that will take place in 2021 and 2022.
’’There are two projects in the form, what’s the difference between them?’’
Your application needs to address two works: Presented Work (1) & Work That Fulfils The Preconditions (2). These two works do not have to be the same. First one should be the work that you’d like to emphasize in you application file. Latter should be the one that fulfils the preconditions mentioned in the Specification document.
’’Is the selection process focused on the presented works or the architects?’’
GEMSS’21’s selection honors the architects, not their works. The applications will be evaluated along with the portfolio and CV. Thus, it is the profile of the architects that are selected, net their works.
